Lewes, DE – CABE started its
business on July 4th, 1976, the Bicentennial
Anniversary of America's Independence Day. To
celebrate CABE's 30th anniversary, CABE staff and
guests set sail aboard the Kalmar Nyckel, a
replica of the ship which carried the first settlers of
the colony of New Sweden to the area that is now
Wilmington, Delaware. On a day of record heat
we enjoyed a nice breeze, a beautiful sunset and
great company.
The original ship was built in
1625 and landed in Wilmington for the first time in
1638. The first crossing of the Kalmar Nyckel brought Swedish
troops who prepared the homes for the
families who arrived aboard Kalmar Nyckel on its second crossing. She
successfully made four round trips to Delaware, a record for successful Ocean crossings at
the time. She eventually served military duty
in the Swedish-Danish War and hauled merchant cargo
before sinking in the late 17th Century. The
replica was built in 1997. Today, the Kalmar
Nyckel sails from Lewes,
Delaware as well as several locations on the
Delaware River and Bay.
